“Soft Sand Dollar”

7 5/8” w x 8” h

I love to walk on the beach both at home on Long Island or on vacation. Collecting shells and then painting them is a favorite activity for me. Sand dollars are not easy to find on the beach but if you are lucky you may find one gently burrowed in the sand. Check to see if it’s alive by looking at the tiny spines, which it uses to move along the ocean floor, if they are moving then it’s still alive.

Their soft white color is caused by the bleaching from the sun.
I let the soft Terra-cotta edge define the top of the animal. The soft washed aqua in the ground compliments the pale grey and cream tones in the sand dollar.

Each shell has been painted on Arches paper, my favorite handmade French watercolor paper. They were sketched first in pencil then lovingly painted in delicate layers of watercolor. Framed in a whitewashed textural wood frame . Wired on the back for hanging purposes.
