“Pigeonnier”

- 5” x 7” watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press paper

This unique little building was built in the 17th century as a pigeon house. In this region of France the wealth of a landowner was measured in the number of pigeons they had, one for each hectare. Legend has it some landowners exaggerated their holding by adding more pigeons than the land they owned. This building has since been converted to a chapel on the upper level and a wine cellar underneath.

The wines were spectacular and I was privileged to have tasted them. The Loire valley is well known for it’s fine wines! I painted this piece while in France and holds so many special memories of my travels. A perfect piece for a Library or French inspired kitchen.
