A single blue lobster is painted head-on, claws raised and antennae stretching toward the top of the card, rendered entirely in deep indigo and cobalt washes with soft white highlights along its shell. Melissa keeps the detail crisp — the segmented tail, the jointed legs, the texture of the shell — against a clean white background, with her signature, "M. Hyatt," at the lower right.
True blue lobsters are one of the ocean's rarest finds — a genetic mutation that overproduces a particular protein gives them their striking indigo color, and only about one in every two million lobsters is born this way. In Maine, where lobster boats are as much a part of the coastline as lighthouses, a blue lobster sighting is the kind of story that gets passed around the docks for years.
