The last civilian keeper, Joseph Hindley, retired in 1972 after a lifetime of keeping the light. The Coast Guard has tended it ever since. For anyone who has passed through Woods Hole on the way to the Vineyard or Nantucket, this lighthouse is an old familiar friend.
