"Rocky Coast" is painted from the rocky shore of East Marion on Long Island's North Fork — but it could just as easily be Maine, or the Connecticut shore, or any stretch of coastline where golden boulders tumble into clear water and the sky goes soft and wide above it all. Warm amber and rust-colored rocks fill the composition, worn smooth and piled at the water's edge, with a white sandy beach in the foreground and lush summer trees reaching in from the left. The water glimmers in clear aqua and teal where it meets the stone. A vast, luminous sky — pale blue-grey with billowy white clouds — stretches above everything.
Look closely and you'll find a lone fisherman standing out on the rocks, rod in hand, perfectly still. It's the kind of quiet detail that makes you stop and look twice — and then want to share with a loved one.
