Cozy Cabin — New England Winter Watercolor Card
Somewhere in the mountains, a red cabin glows warm against the winter white.
A wide, luminous snowfield sweeps through the composition, its shadows catching the cool blue light of a winter afternoon. On the left, three slender white birch trunks rise through the foreground beside a snow-laden pine, its branches heavy and green. A wooden post-and-rail fence angles diagonally from the lower left, drawing the eye deep into the scene toward a small red cabin nestled in the middle distance — simple and square, with white-trimmed windows and a rooftop dusted in snow. Tall evergreens crowd close on either side, their branches drooping under white weight. Above, pale blue-grey mountain peaks rise against a soft winter sky, their edges softened by the same luminous mist that fills the whole painting.
The scene carries the feeling of a Swiss or Scandinavian mountain retreat — something between a painting and a memory.
Melissa built it in loose, luminous watercolor layers, letting the white of the paper stand in for snow and building cool blue-grey shadow across the foreground drifts to give the landscape its depth and chill. It is the kind of card that recipients don't just send — they keep.
Part of Melissa's new Winter Holiday Collection alongside Birch and Bird and Tulmeadow, designed to all complement each other!
