Not every lighthouse gets a second chance. Sandy Neck earned one.
Melissa Hyatt painted Sandy Neck Lighthouse from close in — the viewer stands near the base and looks up as the white cylindrical tower rises against a soft, cloud-filled blue sky. The composition is intimate and architectural: the tower fills the frame, its most striking feature the large black-framed multi-pane windows of the watch room glinting at mid-tower, the black lantern room and iron gallery railing sharp at the top. To the left, a russet-red keeper's building with a dark slate roof tucks into the frame, its warm color playing beautifully against the crisp white of the tower. Dense green shrubs crowd the base on both sides, and the whole scene has the warmth and quiet of a summer morning on the Cape.
Sandy Neck Lighthouse stands at the tip of a six-mile-long barrier beach peninsula on the north side of Barnstable Harbor — a remote, sand-swept spot that gives the lighthouse its name. First lit in 1827 to guide vessels safely into port, it was decommissioned in 1931 and left to the elements for nearly 75 years. The lantern room was removed, earning it the melancholy nickname "headless." It took a dedicated group of volunteers — the Sandy Neck Lighthouse Trust — to bring it back. They restored the tower, returned the lantern, and gave one of Cape Cod's most overlooked lighthouses its long-overdue second chapter.
